OUTSTANDING ORTHOPAEDIC NURSE PRACTICE AWARD

 

PURPOSE

To recognize a NAON member who has provided high quality health care to the orthopaedic patient and has made outstanding contributions over his/her career to the field of orthopaedic nursing.


ELIGIBILITY

  • The candidate must be a current member of NAON.
  • The candidate must have at least two (2) years experience in the field of orthopaedic nursing.
  • The candidate must currently be practicing orthopaedic nursing.
  • Current members of the NAON Executive Board and NAON staff are not eligible for the scholarship.

     

    REQUIRED CRITERIA/DOCUMENTATION

    • A letter of nomination from a nursing colleague and/or nursing supervisor.
    • Three letters of recommendation with signatures and addresses of the nominators. These letters must address the following nine criteria. Whenever possible, specific examples, which illustrate exceptional practice, should be used to support statements.

    The candidate:

      • Consistently meets the physical, psychological, social, spiritual, and educational needs of the orthopaedic patient and family.
      • Uses innovative ideas in planning the care of the orthopaedic patient and uses various approaches to patient care problems.
      • Serves as a sensitive patient advocate.
      • Stimulates nursing colleagues to improve patient care by contributing to an atmosphere that encourages new concepts and skills.
      • Serves as a role model to nursing colleagues and other disciplines.
      • Effectively and sensitively communicates with members of the health care team.
      • Creates an atmosphere of mutual respect with both patients and other members of the health care team.
      • Consistently maintains a high degree of clinical competence and current orthopaedic knowledge.
      • Motivates nursing colleagues and stimulates their appetite for knowledge.
    • Original and six photocopies of all letters.
    • One self-addressed stamped postcard for acknowledging receipt of application.
    • NO FAX COPIES WILL BE ACCEPTED.

     

    REQUIRED CRITERIA/DOCUMENTATION

    All required documentation must be received in the NAON office by April 1, 2008. Incomplete and/or late submissions will not be considered. NAON recommends that applications be sent via registered or certified mail or through an overnight delivery service. NAON is not responsible for non-receipt of applications.

    SELECTION

  • All nominations received by the deadline date will undergo blind review. Applicants will be notified by April 25, 2008.

    It is encouraged that all applicants be in attendance at the Annual Congress for recognition of your accomplishment. Nomination for this award is one of NAON’s highest honors.

    RECOMMENDED AWARD for 2008:

    1. $1,000 Continuing education grant
    2. Waived registration to the NAON Annual Congress
    3. Congress airfare and lodging covered to a maximum of $1000
    4. A commemorative pin
