NAON Education Update
2012 AAOS/NAON Nursing and Allied Health Program
The 2012 AAOS/NAON Nursing and Allied Health Program will be held on February 7-10, 2012 at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, CA. The National Association of Orthopaedic Technologists (NAOT) lectures and casting workshops will be held on February 7-8, 2012 and NAON’s educational sessions will be held on February 9-10, 2012. A total of 28.0 nursing contact hours are being offered through NAON for the NAOT and NAON courses. NAON has no influence over the annual meeting registration fee because it is set by AAOS.
2012 NAON Annual Congress
NAON’s 32st Annual Congress will be held on May 19-22, 2012 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, LA. Please note of the schedule below:
Saturday, May 19, 2012
2012 Review Courses * Pre-Congress Workshops * Special Interest Group sessions * Opening Ceremonies * Opening session * Grand Opening of the Exhibit Hall and Poster Presentations
Sunday, May 20, 2012
Full day of General and Breakout sessions * Exhibit Hall and Poster Presentations * Evening Symposium
Monday, May 21, 2012
Full day of General and Breakout sessions * Exhibit Hall and Poster Presentations * Annual Business Meeting * Annual Congress Party
Tuesday, May 22, 2012
Educational sessions * Closing Ceremonies * Closing session
The decision to decrease one day of Congress was made in response to the Annual Congress Survey results from 4th quarter 2009. Respondents said that the desired length of Congress should be three (46%) to four (40%) days. NAON met that request at 3.5 days. More than 28 contact hours will be achievable by paying one registration fee and attending two SIG sessions, both opening and closing sessions, all available poster presentation hours, the evening symposium, and all general and breakout sessions. One would be hard-pressed to find a better deal than $17.56 per contact hour for a high quality, live educational opportunity that promotes networking with colleagues and friends. An additional 4.0 contact hours are achievable by participating in a review course or one of four pre-Congress workshops. Be sure to use the online registration brochure and register early!
Approver Unit
The 2011 Applicant Evaluation of the NAON Approver Unit Process & Forms was recently completed. The results were positive for the most part, although efforts are soon to be underway to once again streamline the process and forms for ease of use. The following are some comments from the evaluation summary with information listed about them.
1. It is too time-consuming to complete, decrease the amount of information needed. The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC-COA) establishes the requirements for all Approver Units. In order for NAON to maintain its Approver Unit accreditation and the ability to approve programs, all application information is required, including the marketing material.
2. I think the challenge is knowing how much detail to include in the outlines and how many objectives are really needed. It is best to have a limited number of objectives and sufficient detail in the content to show direct support for the objectives. For example, a 6.0-hour conference should have a maximum of 6-12 objectives. It is best to include 1-2 objectives per 1-hour of content. The objectives should be more general in nature because the detail comes from the content. Content can be in outline or bulleted format. The following is an acceptable example.
Objective: Analyze the risk factors of osteoporosis.
Content: older age, women > men, menopause, family history, small stature/low body weight, broken bones or height loss, low calcium/vitamin D, low intake of fruits/vegetables, excess protein, sodium, caffeine, inactivity, smoking, excessive alcohol, losing weight
3. Time from applying to hearing about approval for our offering was way too long. Application reviews are assigned to volunteer reviewers as soon as presence of all required documents is confirmed. Sometimes documents are missing or incomplete and must be obtained before assigning the application for review. The volunteer reviewers are asked to complete their reviews within 3-weeks of notice for the review. It may then take another 1-2 weeks to complete the approval process, depending on the volume of revisions and speed at which revisions are received from the applicant.
4. A reminder that the presenter has to be a member of the planning committee. It is best to include presenters on the planning committee because presenters are the content experts for the continuing nursing education (CNE) event. Presenters do take part in planning a CNE event….they have to agree to the event date/time and develop the session title, objectives, and content. Simply including presenters’ forms on the online planning page meets this requirement at present.
5. What is the need for each planner to give a bio? A biographical data form (BDF) is required of each planner to have on record how the planner is qualified to plan the specific CNE event. Say I’m an orthopaedic nurse (a professional), but have had no experience with planning or delivering education of any kind – not on an education committee, no development or deliverance of in-services, no analysis of educational evaluations, nothing. That means I am NOT qualified to plan the specific CNE event. Again, ANCC-COA requires that nurse planners demonstrate such qualifications in order to assure high quality CNE activities.
6. Please include more information about completing the FDA form. The FDA form must be completed by every CNE presenter. The FDA “cleared” box is checked if any medications or medical devices have been approved by the FDA for the use described in the presentation. The FDA has “not cleared” box is checked if any medications or medical devices will be described for an off-label use, one in which there has not been approval by the FDA. If the “not cleared” box is checked, the manufacturer name and the name of the medication or medical device must be listed on the form. Subsequently, the presenter must disclose to the audience that “X has not been approved by the FDA for X use”. The n/a box is only checked if there will be no mention of any medication or any medical device during the presentation. It is best to have physician presenters check a box other than n/a because they usually do discuss medications or some sort of medical device during their presentations.
7. The Activity Outline Form does not allow easy completion of specific fields. All forms are soon to be revised for ease of use. There were repeated delays in the completion of the 2011 ANCC-COA accreditation program manual that is expected to be received in December or January so that all online form and process revisions can be made just once…it is more economically efficient for NAON to make AU online changes one time.
Please contact Jan Foecke, NAON Approver Unit Administrator, if you do not receive communication about your program at a minimum of one week prior to your program (janfoecke@gmail.com or 816.500.6140). Please know that it is extremely rare that contact hours are denied for a CNE program. The major reason for denial is planning for a vendor to present a topic that clearly communicates product promotion and/or bias. This is not allowed according to the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. No retroactive approval can be granted for a scheduled CNE program. Interested in becoming a reviewer? Please contact Jan Foecke at janfoecke@gmail.com or 816.500.6140. “Achieving Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Approval for Contact Hours” will be presented at NAON’s 32nd Annual Congress on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 for 1.25 category A contact hours.

Discussion Forums
The discussion forums have been streamlined to a total of five: Clinical Practice, Education, General, Leadership/Management, and Research. Forum conversations can be received directly into your email inbox if you check the ‘subscribe to this forum box’ on each forum page.
The SIG Discussion Forums are a great way to discuss practice issues and network with nurse colleagues practicing, or interested in, the same specialty. Sharing documents with your peers is easy by using the attachment feature with these discussion forums. You also have the ability to read what any group is talking about and not just the SIG groups for which you signed up. This opens the door to a greater level of communication among colleagues. You will only have access to a limited number of the Discussion Forums if you are not a NAON member. NAON can help familiarize you with the Discussion Forum process.
