The mission of the NAON Foundation is to support the goals and mission of NAON by providing funding for grants and scholarships to nurses pursuing careers in orthopaedic nursing practice, education, administration and research.

Where has the summer gone! It seems like only yesterday we were in Tampa attending NAON Congress! Congress is always rejuvenating as we reunite with NAON friends, make new friends and of course gain new knowledge by attending the educational sessions and networking with colleagues. Congress is always a highlight for the NAON Foundation.  We personally are able to see many of our efforts come to fruition – from grateful scholarship recipients stopping by our booth, to the eagerness of those getting up early for the Foundation Walk.  Not to mention the excited and smiling faces of those who win one of our electronic raffle items, and the pride of those who make a “brick” donation or purchase Walk and electronic raffle tickets.  Even though Congress is over our work does not stop - and we need your continued support!

This is a special year for the Foundation as we are celebrating our 15th birthday! Here’s how you can help us celebrate

“Fill The Brick” is a project designed for chapters to collect change at meetings and workshops from participates. A cardboard “brick” has been provided to chapters to assist in collecting those nickels and dimes (of course bills are also gratefully accepted!) which really add up. For every $50 collected the chapter name will be added to our “brick wall” on our Web site. At the end of the year the chapter “purchasing” the most bricks will receive a prize. Participates thus far are:

• Baltimore Maryland Chapter
• Dayton Area Orthopaedic Nurses Chapter
• Greater Syracuse Area Chapter
• Horse Capitol Chapter
• NE Wisconsin Chapter
• Orange County Chapter
• South Central Pennsylvania Chapter
• Western Chapter
• Worcester Chapter

$15 in 15 is a means for each NAON member to celebrate our anniversary by donating a minimum of $15 this year. If every NAON member made this minimum donation the Foundation would be able to provide so many more scholarships and assist financially in research projects.

Foundation Club was inaugurated the first of the year to begin our birthday celebration. Individuals donating at various levels will be recognized on our Web site, at Congress and with a Foundation pin. The levels are: Brick $50-$99, Cement $100-249, Mortar $250-$499, Masonry $500-$999, Foundation $1000+.

Searching and Shopping can result in money for the Foundation. What if the NAON Foundation earned a donation every time you searched the Internet? Or how about if a percentage of every purchase you made online went to support our mission? Well, it can! Goodsearch.com is a Yahoo-powered search engine which donates half its advertising revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. Use it just as you would any search engine, get quality search results from Yahoo, and watch the donations add up! Goodshop.com is an online shopping mall which donates up to 37 percent of each purchase to our cause! Hundreds of great stores including Amazon, Target, Gap, Best Buy, ebay, Macy’s and Barnes & Noble have teamed up with GoodShop and every time you place an order, you’ll be supporting the NAON Foundation. Just go to Goodsearch.com and be sure to enter “NAON Foundation” as the charity you want to support. Here’s an example of how utilizing Goodsearch.com can benefit the Foundation:

• If 1,000 members averaged two searches per day --- estimated revenue would be $7,300
• If 1,000 members averaged $500 in purchases per year --- estimated revenue from shopping would be $15,000!\

NAON Foundation Recognizes Award Recipient and Announces New Scholarship

Congratulations are in order to JoAnn Munski, BSN, MSN, ONC, ONP-C, FNP-CNS who is the recipient of the Gigi Viellion Memorial Evidence-based Practice Scholarship for the Fall Institute at the University of Iowa. This scholarship provides the registration fee of $1500 and up to $1500 for travel, lodging and meals.

In honor of NAON Past President Rosanne Arlington, ONCB has renamed their advance practice scholarship to the Rosanne Arlington Memorial ONCB Congress Advanced Practice Scholarship. In addition to being a past president of NAON, Rosanne was an avid supporter of certification and was one of the item writers for the advance practice certification exam.

The Foundation Trustees have new scholarships in the initial planning phase if these scholarships are able to be developed and funding is available we will be announcing on our website and e-blast. If we do not have your email address, please provide it to us so you can be included in our next e-blast newsletter. Have ideas or suggestions for scholarships or funding sources for the Foundation, please share them with us!
