CHAPTER ADVISORY TEAM UPDATE

Dear Chapter Leaders and Members,

The end of 2008 is near. Often times one reflects upon the year and wonders where has it gone? What did I accomplish? What are my opportunities?

The Chapter Advisory Team accomplishments this year included:
1. Lunch and Learn sessions (February, April, July, and October)
2. 2008 Congress breakout session
3. 2008 Leadership Conference (Notebook and CD)
4. 2008 Congress booth
5. Monthly CAT teleconferences
6. Frequent communication (email or phone conversations) between Chapter Advisory Team and Chapter Leaders
7. Reports to the Board
8. Re-activated Northeast #151 New Hampshire
9. Started Rhode Island #215

The opportunity before us is to grow our team. If you are at all interested in pursuing office at a national level some day, the Chapter Advisory Team is a great place to start. This team learns more than most about the operational side of a large organization and the issues of its members. Please consider joining the Chapter Advisory Team and contact any current member for more information.

Chapter activity will ebb and flow dependent upon your orthopaedic issues and membership in your surrounding chapter area. A challenge we face is a decrease in member participation therefore chapters may be placed on inactive status or dissolved. This is no reflection of the leaders – but a sign of our times. The Chapter Advisory Team appreciates all of those that are or have been dedicated to the NAON mission via the Chapters.

The Chapter Advisory Team is here to serve you by giving you the information you require to be successful. The Chapter Advisory Team uses this mailing, distributed once a month via email, to keep the Chapter leaders and members up to date. This November and December will be a combined mailing to help give you some relief during the busy holiday season.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve you.

Happy Thanksgiving - Merry Christmas - Thanks for a great 2008
Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Julie Twiss, RN, BSN, ONC
CAT Chair

NAON EDUCATION UPDATE

NAON Clinical Photo Library

NAON is building a clinical photo library! As we continue growing and updating our list of educational resources we have a need for orthopaedic photos. What better way to illustrate an orthopaedic technique or procedure than with a real photo of one of our members treating a patient! Some examples of photos that you could send in include: X-rays, bone tumors, bone deformities of all types, traumatic orthopaedic injuries, inflammatory disorders, pediatric orthopaedic disorders, orthopaedic OR techniques, mobility equipment, braces/splints If you have a photo or multiple photos that you would like to add to the NAON Library please e-mail us at naon@smithbucklin.com.

All photos must have a copyright release and photo release for those who took the photo and those within the photo. These are available on the www.orthonurse.org> NAON Resources> Additional Resources. We can not guarantee that all photos will be used within one of our educational resources.

ONC Review Course

Did you know that NAON has made exciting upgrades and improvements to the Orthopaedic Nursing Certification Review Course? It began in August 2008. Both scheduling and fees have been streamlined, and the content has been revised from 2007. To learn more or to begin planning for your course please visit www.orthonurse.org > Certification > Orthopaedic Review Course.

Wondering if a course has been scheduled in your area? Check the Regional Educational Offerings page at: www.orthonurse.org > Continuing Education & Conferences > Regional Educational Offerings.

Think you'd like to host one? To plan your Orthopaedic Nursing Review Course, contact Emily Palmer at naon@smithbucklin.com.

Approver Unit

Please note that NAON is making improvements to the Approver Unit for 2009. Beginning January 1, 2009, NAON will no longer mail carbon-copy printed contact hour certificates for attendees. In an effort to be as timely as possible and environmentally friendly, we will e-mail your letter of approval and the certificate template to your program coordinator. Additionally, the cost of submitting a paper application will increase by $10 for each category. The cost of submitting an online application will not change. Thank you in advance for supporting NAON 's efforts to “go green”.

Remember - 28 days is the minimum for approval on your programs to be approved for contact hours through the NAON Approver Unit. For more information and to submit your program, please go to www.orthonurse.org > Continuing Education & Conferences > Approver Unit.

Note that you must login to submit a program electronically. Please contact the NAON National Office at naon@smithbucklin.com or call 800.289.NAON if you need your username or password.

LEADERSHIP at the National Level

The Leadership Search Committee is always seeking NAON members interested in running for National Office or involvement on a NAON Committee. We are reaching out to you as a NAON volunteer to encourage you to get involved at the next level. You may have submitted a Willingness to Serve form in the past few years and we still have that on file, but we ask that you renew your interest by letting the LSC and Committee Chairs know what your current interests are.

If you are interested in a position, we encourage you to contact a Leadership Search Committee member to learn about offices open in the coming election cycles. If you speak to anyone who has served the organization, you will hear all of the benefits, both personally and professionally. If this is not the right year for you, we are happy to help you plan your candidacy alongside the Mentoring Committee.

Take the first step in securing your role in NAON’s leadership structure. Visit the “Become a NAON Leader” page on the Web site to learn more: www.orthonurse.org > AboutNAON > BecomeaNAONLeader

Contact the NAON National Office today at naon@smithbucklin.com and someone will contact you with more information.
