CHAPTER ADVISORY TEAM UPDATE

To Chapter Presidents, Leaders, and Members,

We are in the full swing of the fall season. This means Orthopaedic Nurses’ Day, Halloween, and a time change are fast approaching. Chapter activity is a challenge when we ourselves are busy at work with higher patient volumes, higher acuity, doing more with less and at home with school activities and family schedules.

The mission of the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses is to advance the specialty of orthopaedic nursing through excellence in research, education and nursing practice. NAON is a well recognized professional organization and its integrity is determined by its membership. Policies are in place to ensure that integrity is maintained.

For the Chapters, the end of the year is fast approaching so record keeping is essential for the business year which is January 1 through December 31st, 2008. We tend to get even busier and more stressed during the holidays. I am placing a reminder in this letter to ensure assignments are known for your chapter board so there are no surprises and deadlines to the National Office can be met in a timely manner.

Resources available to assist with the submission of the forms to the National Office are:

1. The NAON Web site under the Chapter tab. There the Chapter Resources are listed. The Chapter Leader Manual is available to all members. Policy 6:04 there states the deadlines of April 1st for the Chapter reports.
2. Each Chapter President received a notebook with a CD-ROM to assist the Chapter board in fulfilling their responsibilities of reporting.
3. Each Chapter has a Chapter Advisory Team representative assigned to them and these volunteers are willing and able to assist.
4. NAON Chapter Coordinator is also an available resource.

Chapter reports for the 2008 year are due April 1, 2009. Your Chapter does not have to wait until April 1 to submit the reports. As soon as the Chapter data is accumulated the report can be submitted to the NAON national office. The forms are available on the Web site and on the CD-ROM.

International Orthopaedic Nurses’ Day is October 30th. I ask you to search out ways to celebrate and communicate our mission within your work group, employer, Chapter, and the public!

Happy International Orthopaedic Nurses’ Day to all of you!

Sincerely,

Julie Twiss, RN, BSN, ONC
CAT Chair

Bring Your LEADERSHIP SKILLS to the National Level

Are you, or is someone in your Chapter, ready to serve on a NAON National Committee or Task Force? Is it time for you or one of your Chapter members to begin working toward a position on the NAON Executive Board?

Leadership skills are honed at the grassroots level. Many influential leaders from all walks of life had their start in a local setting similar to a NAON Chapter. These often prove to be the most well-rounded and earnest leaders in that they have hands-on experience with the seminal issues affecting their profession, and in this case, NAON members.

If you have spent one or more years serving in a leadership capacity within your Chapter, consider taking your experience to the next level. NAON has two committees of experienced leaders ready to guide you through the process.

The Mentoring Committee assists new and young leaders by evaluating strengths, and then provides coaching to help further develop leadership methods. The Leadership Search Committee reaches out to those who have expressed an interest in serving on the National level, evaluates their experiences, and determines their readiness for one of four Executive Board roles: Director, Treasurer, Secretary or President Elect.

Strong leaders gain personal and professional benefits from serving in a National role with NAON. The best and the brightest candidates strengthen their own professional core while helping shape the future of the association. Volunteer leadership in NAON provides a person with business experiences that are unique to association management, and that help shape their professional growth.

While deriving personal growth, an individual’s leadership skills extend out to the membership base in the form of improved products and services, advocacy and partnerships with key organizations.

NAON needs proven leaders with the skill and expertise to anticipate and respond to the dynamic needs of the diverse field of orthopaedic health care providers, educators, administrators and consumers. NAON leaders serve as the voice and face of NAON to the membership and to a wide range of individuals nationally and internationally.

Take the first step in securing your role in NAON’s leadership structure. Visit the “Become a NAON Leader” page on the Web site to learn more: www.orthonurse.org > AboutNAON > BecomeaNAONLeader

Contact the NAON National Office today at naon@smithbucklin.com and someone will contact you with more information.
