CHAPTER ADVISORY TEAM UPDATE

Greetings to Chapter Presidents, Leaders, and Members,

The summer is over, it is already the month of August, and we are focusing on our busy fall schedules. All of the Chapter Presidents and or designated contact persons should have heard from a Chapter Advisory Team (CAT) representative at least once this summer. CAT submits a report to the board in August for the board to review. This report includes the activity of the each NAON Chapter; the number of their members and which chapters are inactive. The report also includes your plans for the year, if you are having meetings/educational opportunities, if you are doing community service, and how you obtain your funds. We realize the summer months are often the Chapters’ down time.

If you have not heard from your CAT representative, I highly encourage you to go to the NAON Web site and find your representative and contact them. The CAT representatives primarily utilize email, and despite our efforts often times our attempt to correspond with you, gets placed in your junk mail, or we may not even have the correct address. Therefore you taking the initiative will be very helpful if you have not yet been contacted by a CAT representative.

The members of CAT are just like you; they work full time at a job, have family commitments, and go to school, etc., plus participate as a volunteer in this NAON role. Most have been or currently also serve as a Chapter President. The CAT representative has committed their time and talent to NAON to ensure that the Chapters have a liaison between the board and its members.

Each month I will be introducing a CAT representative to you so you will know them at a more personal level with the goal of improving communication between the chapters and the CAT representative. Let me introduce Michelle Egan.

Michelle Egan, RN, ONC has been certified and a member of NAON since 1998. She has served as SIG Leader for Trauma and Staff Education, as well as task forces and work groups for the ONCB, and is in her second year on the CAT. Michelle has been an officer in her local chapter, #197 Inland Northwest, many times and served as Education Chair for several years. Michelle was a co-chair of the AAOS/NAON Allied Health session on Trauma several years ago and has presented at NAON Congress, CONA Congress, regional and local NAON events several times. With a clinical specialty of adult acute care, specifically total joints, orthopedic trauma and the recent addition of orthopedic oncology, she has over twenty-five years experience as an orthopedic nurse and a few added years in other areas of nursing. Orthopedics is her passion though, and she can’t imagine doing anything else.

Cordially,

Julie Twiss

NAON NATIONAL LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Become a NAON Leader: Contact a Leadership Search Committee member TODAY to learn more

NAON needs proven leaders with the skill and expertise to anticipate and respond to the dynamic needs of the diverse field of orthopaedic health care providers, educators, administrators and consumers. NAON leaders serve as the voice and face of NAON to the membership and to a wide range of individuals nationally and internationally. NAON’s leadership develops, asserts and preserves the core values of the organization.

The NAON Leadership Search Committee (LSC) identifies these active members who have the skills and experience to serve as elected leaders on the NAON Executive Board. The future of our association depends on the dedication of members like you Chapter leaders who are willing to devote their time, leadership talent and expertise to further our mission and vision in order to advance the specialty of orthopaedic nursing. For most NAON members, service on a committee or task force is the first step toward national leadership and for Chapter leaders it's a great way to see what serving at the National level is like.

Take a few moments to submit a Willingness to Serve Form to express your interest in NAON Committees and leadership positions. The Leadership Search Committee is excited to seek out new volunteers for the next committee cycle or talk with you if you are just considering it for now. For more information regarding the positions available and qualifications visit: www.orthonurse.org > About NAON > Become a NAON Leader. The LSC also encourages you to discuss your desire to serve with your employer. We encourage you to consider seeking a committee position or running for office in the association next year.

2008-2009 Leadership Search Committee members:
Margaret McWilliams, Jane Smith, Tandy Gabbert, Cheryl Grove and Reva Stachniw – use the NAON Member Directory to get in touch with us or contact the National Office at naon@smithbucklin.com!
