  • The Beginning of NAON

A stronger and firmer foundation for the development of an orthopaedic nursing organization was one of the main goals of the founders of the National Association of Orthopedic Nurses (NAON). Recovering from the unexpected dissolution of the previous organization (ONA), members from across the country met together in Atlanta, Ga., on March 8, 1980, under the leadership of Nancy Hesselbach and Barbara Fiehler from St. Louis, Mo. Prior to this meeting, which was convened during the annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), orthopaedic nurses were individually and jointly requesting the development of another Orthopaedic Nursing specialty organization-one that would be strong, one that would endure, and one that would meet the needs of the membership. Thus NAON was established and incorporated in the state of Missouri on April 14, 1980.
