Description:

1. Introduction – 5 Pavilion history
• 5 Pavilion North is a 30-bed orthopaedic unit
• Approximately 30 total joint surgeries per week
• 2 primary orthopaedic physician groups with in-house PAs, 3 additional local physician groups served
• Three ONC-certified nurses on the unit
• Pre-operative patient education classes taught by staff nurse and ortho navigator

2. Plan to grow as a Center of Excellence– 2017
• Center of Excellence – “Hospital within a hospital”
o Design care for a specific disease process
o Treatment through a full cycle of care
o Develop high performance care teams
o Accountability for outcomes and costs
o Reorganize resources and personnel to meet patient and family needs
o Dedicated teams that can be cross-trained
• Build care teams to implement change
• Outpatient nurse coordinator hired to assist with pre-discharge planning, patient education.
• Orthopaedic tech hired to improve patient mobility with evening ambulation, enhance patient experience.
• Our identified gap – performance of RNs through certification.
• Passavant’s journey to Magnet – April 2017
o Organizational goal to obtain certification of nurses
o UPMC Career Ladder goal
o Obtainment of certifications can be a challenge by education and leadership.
o Certification is not only a unit-based goal, but hospital and organizational system goal.

3. Our orthopaedic review course
• Two sessions held – Apr 2018 and Feb 2019
• 2018 – 15 attendees, 2019 – 22 attendees
• Grant through the Passavant Hospital Foundation was used to cover cost of certification exam, as well as membership to NAON.
o Enrolled in “Re-test for Success” – retest at no additional cost
• Review course content purchased through NAON
• 7.5 CE hours offered to participants
• Review course included study tips
• Coordinated with unit leadership, education, orthopaedic navigator.
• Staff nurse helped to coordinate the class- this was a Senior Professional Staff Nurse Level 2 career ladder project.

4. Outcomes of the orthopaedic unit
• 12 ONC certified nurses, 2 non-ONC certified
• Orthopaedic tech achieved certification – ROT (registered ortho technologist)
• Patient satisfaction (HCAHPS) – above 90th percentile for the last 6 months (December 2018 to June 2019)
• Nurse retention – no nurse terminated or resigned from 2017 to June 2019
