Movement is Life Contribution Blog: Screening for Social and Behavioral Risk - Use Disorders; Submitted by Charla B. Johnson, DNP, RN-BC, ONC

According to  Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the findings from the 2018 national survey revealed that approximately 60% of people 12 and older used some type of substance (i.e. tobacco, alcohol, or illicit drugs) in the past month. In a qualitative study by Fernandez, et al (2021) in people with alcohol use and scheduled for surgery, explored the patients stress, health, and alcohol use. One of the emerging themes was the use of alcohol for pain management. An intervention identified was alcohol screening, intervention, and treatment referral. In lower extremity fracture surgery, Cunningham, et al (2021) found that SUD, both use and abuse were risk factors for increased perioperative pain management with opiod prescription filling. As orthopaedic nurses, we can impact the integration of nonopioid pain management strategies across settings. We can also lean into the necessary screening of social determinants of health items by valuing their importance in patient centric care with the goal of improved patient outcomes.
