Online Virtual Chapter Affiliate

Wow! It’s hard to believe that it’s been three months since Congress!! I always come back from Congress inspired to do more and be better. But the energy and momentum from the incredible education and the wonderful networking is very hard to keep up. There are great opportunities to learn with the webinars and podcasts throughout the year, but sometimes all you need is to bounce ideas off other people and find out what’s working for them.

Where I live, I’m 150-300 miles away (depending on which way you travel) from the next large hospital who has an orthopedic program. I love the nurses I work with, but it’s hard to get such a small group together to talk about issues. So I approached the NAON board and the CAT (Chapter Affiliate Team) and brought up a proposal for a Virtual Chapter Affiliate. This way people across the nation could get together, talk, provide learning opportunities, and generally help support each other like a regular Chapter or Affiliate would. It was approved and we have started meeting!! So far, we’ve had one meeting and have plans for the rest of the year. Whether you are in a chapter, far from a chapter, have no idea what a chapter or affiliate is, or just want some fun NAON members to hang out with and share experiences with- we are your group. We currently are meeting every odd month (Sept, Nov, Jan, etc) on the first Tuesday at 8 pm ET, 7pm CT, 6 pm MT, 5 pm PT, 1 am Sydney, etc. We would love for you to be involved if you want to be!!  If you want to be involved, please either fill out this survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RXNJRG2  or email me (Lyndee Leavitt) at lyndee.leavitt@hotmail.com for more details. I hope to hear from lots of you and see you all at our next meeting!!!

Healthy Tips from ANA's Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation™: Healthy Work Environment; Submitted by Laura Hixon, MSNE, RN-BC, ONC

The ANA Healthy Nurse discusses an optimal healthy work environment where nurses feel safe, empowered and satisfied with their work. You might wonder where is this magical place?

Your safety and welfare are important so here are some thoughts from the American Nurses Association about incivility, bullying and workplace violence.

Key Points:

  1. The nursing profession will not tolerate violence of any kind from any source;
  2. Nurses and employers must collaborate to create a culture of respect;
  3. The adoption of evidence-based strategies that prevent and mitigate incivility, bullying, and workplace violence; and promote health, safety, and wellness and optimal outcomes in health care;
  4. The strategies employed are listed/categorized by primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention;
  5. The statement is relevant for all health care professionals and stakeholders, not just nurses.
  6. In 2019 the #EndNurseAbuse Professional Issues Panel developed policy on barriers to reporting workplace violence.

How you can make a difference.

  • Build and maintain healthy, respectful relationships using excellent, open communication and inclusiveness.
  • Evaluate yourself, carefully considering your words and actions.
  • Gain and practice conflict negotiation/resolution skills.
  • Be polite—say thank you, acknowledge kindness, apologize when appropriate, and make amends if needed.
  • Establish norms- collaboration, sharing, offering assistance, being responsible, avoiding gossip/rumors, giving and receiving constructive criticism, and sharing encouragement.
  • When bullied, consider responding directly to instigator, if needed, seek guidance, and report the event immediately.
  • Bystanders that witness a bullying incident should support and act as an advocate for the target.

Movement is Life Contribution Blog: Movement is Life 501(3)(3) Formation and the 2022 National Caucus Addressing Musculoskeletal Health Disparities; Submitted by Yashika J. Watkins, PhD, MPH

On June 30, 2022, Zimmer Biomet Holdings, Inc. announced its creation of an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization focused on addressing musculoskeletal health disparities.  Since its existence, Movement is Life has been a leader in its efforts to increase awareness of the interaction of chronic disease, joint pain, movement, and limited mobility.  This new transdisciplinary coalition will allow Movement is Life to expand its outreach via its programs, which focus on behavior change, education, advocacy, and primary prevention. Given the heightened importance of social determinants of health, Movement is Life’s 501(c) (3) status is an opportune time to address disparities in underserved communities and populations. Please partner with us, during this exciting time, to improve orthopaedic outcomes for minorities, women, and urban and rural communities.

Join us November 10th – 11th, 2022 at our National Caucus November 10th-11th, 2022 at the Marriott Marquis Washington, DC as we discuss ways to reduce musculoskeletal health disparities at the patient, healthcare provider, community and policy levels.  Being only 10 pounds overweight increases the force on the knee by 30-60 pounds with each step. Given that joint pain may be an early indication of osteoarthritis (OA) and that being overweight or obese can increase the risk and progression of OA, prevention of OA is critical. Women, African Americans and Latinos/Hispanics experience more severe OA, disability, and functional limitations, but they have less than ideal access to medical interventions regardless of insurance status.  In addition to these startling issues, the aforementioned groups also have some of the lowest levels of physical inactivity and highest levels of obesity.  How do we intervene early on these risk factors to prevent OA? How do we impact the built environment to support healthier behaviors that prevent or mitigate OA? These questions and more will be answered at our annual Caucus. Please visit https://www.movementislifecaucus.com/2022-caucus/ for meeting details.
