Advancing Health Equity and Access to Care

The NAON supported John Lewis Equality in Medicare and Medicaid Treatment (EMMT) Act was introduced by U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) on May 2. The landmark bill would require development of a payment model that addresses social determinants of health and health disparities, particularly with respect to minorities, underserved areas and high-risk individuals.

NAON is in full support of the bill, as our members know firsthand the inequities within the healthcare system and struggles that many patients have to pay for the care they need. Learn more here

Healthy Tips from ANA's Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation™ Blog Submitted by Laura Hixon, MSNE, RN-BC, ONC

In the Healthy Nurse, Health Nation a challenge has emerged. It is called "move your body, clear your mind." We know nurses are stressed with life, work and families and it is a great idea to take a moment to care for your joints by stretching every day. We do this when something hurts, but including movement everyday can improve the way the body feels and ease your mind! There are different types of stretching including static (holding a position), dynamic (active movements through a full range of motion) and ballistic stretches (bouncing to emphasize a stretch).

Here are some benefits of adding even five minutes daily of static and dynamic stretching to your routine:

  1. Improve flexibility and muscle performance, lengthen muscles, improve range of motion
  2. Can make daily tasks feel better like sqautting, sitting and bending
  3. Can prepare body for a workout
  4. Can decrease injuries
  5. Can calm body after excercise
  6. Help identify stiffness or tightness in body, especially in the hips
  7. Can help you relaxe
  8. Stretching is an act of self-care! It is time for your body
  9. Helps you to end your workout feeling calmer and happier

Stretches should be held for a minuimum of 30 seconds, enough time to feel your muscles relaxing. Stretching should not hurt, you can feel tight at first, but it should not be painful. Read more here for suggestions.

Happy Nurse's Month, I'm proud to serve together. I hope that no matter what enviroment you practice in or have practiced in, you know your contribution is valued and appreciated. Enjoy your stretching and relaxation, you have earned it!
