Gratitude - Grace, Graciousness or Gratefulness; Submitted by Laura Hixon, MSNE, RN-BC, ONC

In the busy life of work and anxiety, you may wonder what you have to be grateful for? In an article by Harvard Medical School (2021), finding a way to give thanks can, at the very least, make you happier, so it's worth a try!

Other things being grateful does-

  1. Helps you acknowledge the goodness in your life
  2. Can connect you with something bigger than yourself
  3. Positive emotions can improve health, lower blood pressure, and cortisol
  4. Gratitude can help build strong relationships

How can you build up an attitude of gratitude?

  1. Write or say thank you- express appreciation to anyone and everyone; it's free!
  2. Thank your loved ones each day- even in your heart can bring joy
  3. Journal- gratitude a day keeps the boos away; count your blessings
  4. Mindfulness meditation or prayer- take note of the air we breathe and our ability to choose gratitude!

I hope everyone has a wonderful, peaceful Thanksgiving full of laughter and gratitude!

Laura Hixon, MSNE, RN-BC, ONC

World guidelines for falls prevention and management for older adults

The Fragility Fracture Network (FFN) is happy to share the resources on falls provided in a recent publication in Age and Aging, the scientific journal of the British Geriatric Society. The World Guidelines for Falls Prevention and Management for Older Adults: A Global Initiative were developed by the World Falls Task Force, which included 96 experts from 39 countries in five continents. These individuals had a multidisciplinary background representing 36 scientific and academic societies. Input to the guidelines was accessed from clinicians, patients and carers through a 3-year period.

The document was written for healthcare professionals working with older adults. It provides a framework on how to identify and assess the risk of falls as well as the treatments that are effective on a one on one basis or in a group format.
