Healthy Tips From ANA's Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation™ Blog

Happy August everyone! It is National Wellness Month!

Here are a few things to support your wellness this August:

  1. Create a culture of well-being: at work, local organizations, schools and churches: Research shows a positive correlation between well-being and overall engagement.
  2. How to help others: Practice small, daily acts to manage stress, be more productive, and feel happier and healthier.
  3. Embrace a self-care mindset: Getting quality sleep, eating a healthy diet and moving our bodies, actively managing stress, practicing self-compassion and engaging in mindfulness or meditation. It’s even more important for caregivers, who must take care of themselves in order to take care of others.
  4. Encourage engaging in physical activity during the workday: Incorporating bursts of movement or stepping outside- walking, steps challenges or not using the elevator.
  5. Make sure your workplace reflects a commitment to wellness: Ergonomically friendly workspaces, a relaxing atmosphere with greenery and natural light are key.
  6. Offer more support for caregiving: Family and caregiving responsibilities can be a significant contributor to stress.
  7. Encourage water consumption: Improves the look and quality of skin to keeping the body functioning at optimal levels and controlling calories
  8. Lean into meditation: Meditation trains the brain and body to relax and focus on the present instead of all the “chatter”. Even five minutes a day can be helpful.
  9. Make it easier to focus on nutrition: Focus on nutrition include healthy grab-and-go dinners, meal prep on the weekend, access local fresh produce market.
  10. Incorporate stretching: Build in some stretch breaks which calm the mind, lower blood pressure and slow the heart rate.
  11. Give permission to disconnect and set boundaries: Technology makes it possible to work anywhere, anytime so establish hours for emails and to shut down for the day
  12. Explore gratitude and positivity: record the things you’re grateful for daily
  13. Give a small token of appreciation: Recognition and feeling appreciated are key engagement factors.

Our well-being is something that we can and should prioritize throughout the workday. August’s National Wellness Month is a great time to start sending that message to our brains!

Thank you and have a wonderful month!
