Who is getting a good night’s sleep?

Waking up after a good night’s sleep feels amazing. I feel refreshed and ready to tackle the day. Sometimes it seems like it can be harder to get than we think. It can be a journey but American Holistic Nurses Association provides some suggestions:

  1. Sleep Environment: Dark and quiet room, comfortable temperature. Comfortable mattress and bedding.
  2. Shift-work: Minimize noise and light in your sleep environment. Ear-plugs or a white-noise machine, blackout shades or a quality comfortable eye mask (the night shifter knows this is essential!)
  3. Use a sleep enhancing linen mist or diffuser with orange, lavender, or chamomile oil.
  4. Wind-Down Routine: Relaxation, breathwork, restorative yoga, or Tai Chi, nice soaking bath.
  5. Sleep Hygiene: Reducing blue-light absorption (screen-time), cigarettes, alcohol, and caffeine two hours before intended sleep.
  6. Manage the “Thought Whirlwind”: sleep difficulties can be a sign of a brain in distress: when disturbing thoughts, anxiety, or nightmares, contribute to a sleep deficit, consider this a ‘warning’ light.

If you are struggling with sleep these days, you are not alone! Millions of adult’s experience sleep disorders and a large majority lose sleep related to stress and anxiety.

As nurses we know how important this is for our lives and essential for functionality, that is why it is in the Maslow Hierarchy for physiological needs. So hopefully you can find a way to prioritize rest, relaxation and a good night’s sleep!
