Healthy Tips from ANA's Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation™ Blog Submitted by Laura Hixon, MSNE, RN-BC, ONC

ANA Health Nurse January's challenge is the "Clear the Clutter" Challenge. This is a 10-day challenge that might seem overwhelming but has potential benefits!

As everyone has put up the leftover decorations from Christmas and is trying to reset for the year, it can be tough to know where to start. What many know is that extra clutter can be stressful. The more things you have, the more to clean, which can lead to anxiety (Clark, 2019).

Here are some ways to combat clutter:

  1. Take 10 minutes daily to put things where they belong
  2. Organize your environment to increase efficiency
  3. Clear your computer desktop and your physical desktop
  4. If you don’t use it, move it. Sell, donate or store items.
  5. Clear space and mind to increase peace and sleep
  6. Remove clutter to improve attention, concentration, and focus
  7. Clutter can lead to increased procrastination, burnout, negative job satisfaction
  8. Clutter can bring stress, depression, or anxiety
  9. Clutter can even be a risk to the physical safety

The new year can bring motivation to move out of the old to make room for new experiences in 2023. We can have a fresh start as we cross getting organized off the to-do list!
