Exercise Outdoors
By Laura Hixon, DNP, MSNE, RN-BC, ONC
“Wellness training can include yoga and other holistic practices that are designed to offer tools that can help you to consistently focus on your physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and environmental health.” — Frances Akubuilo, DNP, RN from ANA Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation - Year 3 Highlights
Outdoor exercise has physiological benefits to the body and regular recreational physical exercise is crucial to health promotion and disease prevention. Klaperski et al. (2019) suggests some important points about the additional benefits of outdoor physical exercise:
- Outdoor or “green” exercise is the combination of exercise and natural environments
- Exposure to nature during “green exercise” has positive effects on physical and mental health, perceived calmness, reduces stress, anxiety, improves mood, self-esteem, concentration
- Many types of outdoor activity to choose from- outdoor yoga, walking, gardening, bicycling, recreational sports
- Take a deep breath, get outside and let’s move!
