Healthy Tips from ANA's Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation™ Blog

Tis the season!

The days get shorter and weather is cooler, many love this time of year as the leaves change and holidays are around the corner. I have heard many tell me how shocked they are that it is almost Thanksgiving! Many are working shifts and spending time in between with family. So what can you do if the holidays are sad, stressful or full of anxiety?

Dr. Weir from Huntsman Mental Health Institute shares some of her tips for the holidays:

  1. Reflect on how you feel (from sad to anxious to exhausted) and ask for help if needed. You are not alone.
  2. Avoid holiday stress and anxiety- OK, right, but hold on! We can say no sometimes.
  3. Can do/must do schedule- prioritize things you want to do, leave the rest
  4. Journaling- can help the reflection of stress, sadness and gives a place to process emotions
  5. Limit alcohol use- more than 1-2 drinks per sitting can affect mood, sleep, and stress
  6. Plan a self-activity- a day trip or hike to a favorite spot can boost your mood
  7. Balance eating and indulging, eat healthy on days you don't have plans
  8. Volunteering is always a mood booster; even an hour reminds you of the reason for the season
  9. Limit overwhelming social media- "life is not always what it looks like on social media."
  10. Set boundaries- you can say no to things that cause you stress.

You can enjoy the holiday with the people you care about and acknowledge all of your feelings. You are valuable, a masterpiece, some might say.

I hope you have a wonderful holiday season full of your favorite things! All the Best!
