Water and Hydration
Water is life! We are 75% water and as we get older, it is closer to 55%. Our blood volume is 90% water, so it makes sense how essential it is for our health. How often to work to get our daily water in? Here are some considerations that might keep us motivated!
- Exercise- Fluid loss of 6-10% through sweat can occur, drink fluids before any thirst.
- Mind- Mild levels of dehydration can affect your mood and memory, causing stress.
- Gastrointestinal- Dehydration can cause constipation. Water balances fiber intake.
- Kidney function- Regulation of fluid requires hydration to filter blood waste and excrete in urine.
- Heart- Hydration is a part of the blood volume, affecting blood pressure and hemodynamics. Lower blood volume can lead to lower blood pressure.
So how much water do you need? This depends on you, your activity level and lifestyle. Ultimately you will need to listen to your body. If you are thirsty, you should reach for that high quality H2O first. Chances are you are already dehydrated, so be sure to get the best benefits from water itself. Happy drinking!
