Complications Competency Course

The NAON Complications Competency online course was designed to be a competency assessment tool for nurses caring for patients with musculoskeletal issues. Nurses across the orthopaedic care continuum will examine specific patient scenarios to assess knowledge of care for patients of different ages and from pre through post-operative stages. NAON’s Practice Points were initially developed as a clinical resource specific to an orthopaedic patient complication. Each NAON Practice Point is included in this course package and accompanies a specific module within the course.

This course may be used as an assessment of a nursing team’s knowledge base in prevention, recognition and nursing actions to care for patients presenting with or at high risk for a complication.  This course may be used as an onboarding tool with new hires to assess baseline knowledge of the novice to practice nurse or transfers into a musculoskeletal care setting. Nurse educators may use this course with staff for a periodic ongoing assessment of competency with a musculoskeletal nursing team within a health care setting across the care continuum, or as a guide to determine knowledge deficits and target practice gaps to enhance knowledge.

Learning is self- guided and learners may stop and resume the course content.
