NAON Blog – Prioritizing Your Nutrition

By Laura Hixon, DNP, MSNE, RN-BC, ONC

Nursing is a high-demand profession with long shifts, unpredictable hours, and fast paced environments can lead to skipped meals or poor food choices. Good nutrition is essential to keep your energy up, your mind sharp, and your body strong. We have been there, when the yummy donuts or Halloween candy are in the breakroom and we are trying to eat healthy, what a challenge!

  1. Don’t skip meals- Eat small, regular meals to stay energized.
  2. Stay hydrated- Keep a water bottle with you throughout your shift. Dehydration can cause fatigue and headaches.
  3. Pacak healthy snacks- Greek yogurt, trail mix, veggies and hummus, hard boiled eggs, whole grain crackers and cheese.
  4. Meal prepping- Aim for balanced meals like lean protein, whole grains, vegetables, health fats
  5. Skip sugary snacks and choose complex carbs and protein- Oats, brown rice, quinoa, chicken, beans, leafy greens and citrus fruit
  6. Limit caffeine intake late in sleep, avoid substituting caffeine for meals
  7. Nutrition for night shift- Eat light, nutritious meal before your shift, bring energy sustaining snacks, avoid large meals
  8. Step away- Be sure to take a break where you can sit and eat
  9. Be prepared- If others are ordering out, think of some fresh whole options
  10. Cravings- When the blood sugar drops or fatigue sets in, we crave something sweet. Try fruit or dark chocolate to satisfy and get an antioxidant boost.
  11. Share healthy tips with friends- Community support is always helpful

Remember: Taking care of your body allows you to better care for others. Prioritize your nutrition—it’s a key part of professional self-care.
