Welcome to Spring! Here in Texas, the bluebonnets are blooming and beautiful. Spring reminds us of new and fresh opportunities. Many take time to do spring cleaning or refresh a new idea. The NAON Congress is also an opportunity for new and fresh ideas in orthopedics!
J Stanborough from Healthline discuss the great benefits of learning and reading. Hopefully these will inspire reading over scrolling social media!
- MRIs can show brain activity increasing during reading.
- Fiction or non-fiction can spark feelings essential for navigating many social relationships.
- Vocabulary for books can improve communication and context in relationships.
- Reading and solving math problems keeps the mind working, and stimulating the brain can decrease the likelihood of developing plaques or lesions in those with dementia.
- 30 minutes of reading can help lower blood pressure, heart rate, and psychological distress.
- Can prepare you for rest better than phone or TV.
- Books can lessen feelings of being alone and even allow an escape from the world for a while.
- Those that read 3.5 hours every week are 23% more likely to live longer than those who do not.
So how can we regularly read? Who has the time??
- Read a few minutes a day with either a device, print books, or alternate.
- Now and then, skip the binging of a show for a book
- Reading with or to your children
- Visit a library, get a library card, and enjoy the experience of sitting in a quiet place and reading.
- Pick a topic you are passionate about (like orthopedics) and keep learning. The Orthopaedic Journal is a wonderful source!
Happy Reading!
