Reading for Work and for Fun

This year at NAON Congress in Orlando, we really focused on learning new things! As we are kept up to date on new topics and the up-to-date research, we spend a lot of time reading! But hopefully, we read for work and also for fun.

  1. Strengthens your brain- MRIs can show brain activity increasing during reading.
  2. Empathy- fiction or non-fiction sparks feelings for navigating many social relationships.
  3. Vocabulary builder- books can improve communication and context in relationships.
  4. Improve cognitive decline- reading and solving math problems keeps the mind working, and stimulating the brain can decrease the likelihood of dementia.
  5. Reduce stress- 30 minutes of reading can lower blood pressure, heart rate, and psychological distress.
  6. Prepare you for rest- print books may be more effective than anything that produce light.
  7. Alleviate depression- books can lessen loneliness and allow an escape for a while.
  8. Longevity- those that read books 3.5 hours every week are 23% more likely to live longer.

So how can we regularly read? Who has the time??

  1. Start by reading a few minutes a day with either a device, print books, or alternate.
  2. Now and then, skip the binging of a show for a book
  3. Share reading with your children
  4. Visit a library, get a library card, and enjoy the experience of sitting in a quiet place and reading.

Happy Reading!
